July 28 A New Year for the Imagine Cup
Imagine Cup 2009 has come to a spectacular close as 444 students from 70 countries gathered in Cairo, Egypt for the world finals last July 3-8. The competitions were intense. The scenery was breathtaking. The food was overflowing and flavorful with spices. More importantly, students from various cultures and backgrounds blended as one through technology and friendship. The TeamThis year, the Philippines has sent it’s biggest delegation ever with two teams competing in different categories. For Software Design is a team from Ateneo de Manila University comprised of Philip Cheang, Rodrick Tan, Wilhansen Li, Thomas Dy, and their coach Dr. Ma. Mercedes Rodrigo. For Mash Up is a team from De La Salle University comprised of Janine Trogo, Janelle Campita , and their coach Dr. Jose Lloyd Espiritu.
Welcome PartyAfter a 15 hour flight, the team checked in at the Intecontinental City Stars Hotel. We were greeted by the sphinx replica at the grand lobby entrance. It is now sinking in that we were in Egypt! Also, it was surprising to see a huge pyramid at the equally surprising hotel swimming pool. We barely had enough time to unpack and explore the hotel and it was already time to go to the welcome party at the Citadel. The highlights of the evening were the parade of nations, inspirational talk of Microsoft chief architect Ray Ozzie, welcome remarks by the legendary Joe Wilson, and ended with cultural performances and great food.
Elimination RoundsDay 2 is the start of the competitions. The atmosphere is intense and everybody is preparing for their presentations. Not even the game room or food buffet could distract them. From 60+ SD teams, there will be 12 left in the 2nd round, then further shortlisted to 6 team finalists (and all this happens today). The Ateneo team spent the entire morning rehearsing their presentation. With a panel of 4 judges, the team delivered a flawless presentation. The judges were impressed by the technical merits of their project and how well they presented and answered questions. After their presentation, some of the judges approached the team and offered to hire them after graduation. There was a long and nervous wait for all the teams to finish their presentations and the judges to deliberate on the teams moving forward. Unfortunately, we didn't make it to the next round. Still with the competitive spirit up, we waited for the finalists to do their presentations and learn how we can do better to take the stage next time.
Day 3. It's DLSU's turn to meet their judges. Actually, Mash Up entries were already pre-judged. They are meeting the judges for a competition debriefing and some Q&A to add points to the weak areas of their entry. The results would be announced on the last day during the awarding ceremony. With all the competitions done, we planned to tour the city for the rest of the day. We went for a Nile river cruise until sun set (sundown is at 7:30). Afterwards, we watched the Light and Sound show at the pyramids (laser show projected on the 3 pyramids and sphinx).
Cultural DayDay 4 is when all competitions end and the students get to tour Cairo for the Cultural Day. Finally, we get to see the Giza pyramids up close. We all got the chance to climb the tallest pyramid. And also visit where they prepare the mummies near the sphinx. Then off to dinner in the Al Azhar Park where we were entertained by a very colorful (and dizzying) show. Did I mention food and more food?
AwardingOn the last day of the Imagine Cup, we head back to the Giza pyramids. In the middle of the dessert, between the setting sun and the grand pyramids, lay the stage for the Imagine Cup awarding ceremony. There couldn't have been a more perfect location, it was surreal. Then came the moment we were all waiting for. The Software design top three are: Romania (1st), Russia (2nd), Brazil (3rd). For the Mash Up competition, the top teams are: United States (1st), Poland (2nd tie), Singapore (2nd tie). For a complete list of winners, click here.
Imagine Cup 2010 PolandEvery year, we get better and better, closer to taking home the Imagine Cup. Next year, in Poland, it is our time. We have the same challenge to all students around the world, to "imagine a world where technology helps solve the worlds toughest problems". But there are new ways to compete, stay tuned. We are now officially looking for the next teams to represent the Philippines in Imagine Cup 2010 Poland. Step up to the challenge! The results of the other 8 Imagine Cup competition categories are out and a team from De La Salle University placed in the top 6 teams worldwide for the Mash Up category! Janine Trogo and Janelle Marie Campita (DLSU Team Grace8fhex – coached by DLSU professor Danny Cheng) bested 116 teams from all over the world in 2 rounds to land in the top 6 team finalists along with Poland, US, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Brazil.
So it’s gonna be a blue boys team (Software Design) and a green girls team (Mash Up) this July 3-8 at the Imagine Cup 2009 World Finals in Egypt! They have done it again! The Ateneo de Manila University has defended their title as champions in the recently concluded Imagine Cup 2009 Software Design Philippine finals. The competition was held in the Augusto R. Gonzales theater of De La Salle College of Saint Benilde on April 20, 2009. The winning team, Nohako Studios, developed a system called Caduceus that will consolidate the medical records of Filipinos and, through data mining, generate useful information that will aid researchers and policy makers. Two of the team members have also represented the country in last year’s competition in Paris. We’ve invited experts in the field of technology, research, entrepreneurship, and governance to be part of our distinguished panel of judges. They are Agnes Aliman (UNIC National Information Officer), Beng Coronel (President, Philippine Software Industry Association), Arup Maity (President/CEO, BlastAsia), and Dr. Jaime Caro (Chairman, UPD Department of Computer Science). The champions will receive a free trip to Cairo, Egypt to compete in the Imagine Cup World Finals on July 3-9, 2009. They will also receive Php40,000 worth of training from our sponsor MiSNET. The 2nd place and 3rd place teams will receive Php20,000 and Php10,000 gift certificates, respectively. All team finalists will be registered to BizSpark and get software, support, and visibility to help them refine their projects and produce startup companies. Free Microsoft certification exam vouchers will also be given to all finalists! Parallel Computing applications are helping turn ideas that were once nothing more than farfetched dreams in to reality. Dynamic 3D environments, complex investment analysis, and product development tools are just a few examples of what parallel computing makes possible. The computing industry is at an inflection point. Over the last 30 years, software developers have relied on exponential growth in processor power in order to increase the performance, feature functionality, and user experience richness of their applications. However, this clock speed driven free lunch is over. While the average PC clock speed increased more than 10x between 1993 and 1999, this average hasn’t doubled in the last four years. SMS Server Toolkit enables anyone with a Windows smartphone and a PC to create an SMS server, thereby bridging computer networks with that of SMS. Short Message Service" (SMS)-capable phones are the most common digital-access devices in the world, with more than 2.5 billion devices sold to date. Unfortunately, much of the great data and functionality based in PC networks has been unavailable to SMS-based phones to date. Photography Technologies Photosynth is a potent mixture of two independent breakthroughs: the ability to reconstruct the scene or object from a bunch of flat photographs, and the technology to bring that experience to virtually anyone over the Internet. Using techniques from the field of computer vision, Photosynth examines images for similarities to each other and uses that information to estimate the shape of the subject and the vantage point each photo was taken from. With this information, we recreate the space and use it as a canvas to display and navigate through the photos. Photosynth was inspired by the breakthrough research on Photo Tourism from the University of Washington and Microsoft Research. This work pioneered the use of photogrammetry to power a cinematic and immersive experience. Providing that experience requires viewing a LOT of data though—much more than you generally get at any one time by surfing someone’s photo album on the web. That’s where our Seadragon™ technology comes in: delivering just the pixels you need, exactly when you need them. We would be showcasing their qualifying entries in our upcoming launch of Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008, and Visual Studio 2008 on April 10-11 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Mall of Asia. They would be presenting their final projects in the local finals on April 14-15 (details and invites to follow). The winning team (and coach) will represent the country and compete with the rest of the world in the Imagine Cup Finals in Paris, France!
We would also like to recognize and congratulate the contestants who joined the other Imagine Cup categories and have advanced to Round 2. This is the final elimination round before they qualify to compete in the finals! Round 2 in all categories ends in May 2.
Embedded Development - This competition challenges teams to go beyond the desktop, and to build a complete hardware and software solution using Windows CE and the hardware provided. Former winners have used their ideas to start their own businesses and to jumpstart their careers.

Project Hoshimi – Is a game on Artificial Intelligence. You write the code representing the behavior and the strategy of a team of characters going through different types of missions. The results are not only fun to create but also fun to watch as the programs play it out in a virtual 3D environment for all to see.

IT Challenge - The IT Invitational highlights the art and science of developing, deploying, and maintaining IT systems that are efficient, functional, robust and secure. The IT invitational challenges students to demonstrate their proficiency in understanding not only the theory of how Microsoft Windows-based networks and applications work, but also how to keep them working.

All competition categories are closed, except for the Photography Invitational (which closes May 2). This is a team competition that invites students to capture a series of still photos that tell a story and draws an emotional response from their audience. The photo essay should provoke thought and discussion and inspire the audience to take further action to create a sustainable environment. Currently we have teams from UP Diliman, De La Salle – Manila, and DLS College of Saint Benilde in this category.
